History

Members of the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe were the first settlers in the Chatham Borough area. Sir George Carteret purchased their land in 1680. John Budd later purchased this land and sold it to Daniel and John Day. John Day built a bridge across the Passaic River and opened a tavern in the area. The village of Day’s Bridge with mills, a blacksmith and a church was established in the area. The village was named Chatham in 1773 after the Earl of Chatham. Its population increased after the Revolutionary War. Farmers began traveling on a road through the area, and railroad tracks were built in Chatham in 1837. Tourists began visiting the area after the Civil War. Chatham Borough was established in 1897.
